Proposed by the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) and managed by the ICSC Foundation \u2013 which in turn has 51 founder members from the public and private sectors, from the world of industry and scientific research, distributed across Italy \u2013 it has an essential role to play in fostering the competitiveness, innovation and growth of Italy and Europe.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"w-separator us_custom_e2e8be4e has_text_color size_custom with_line width_default thick_1 style_solid color_border align_center\" style=\"height:1rem\"><div class=\"w-separator-h\"><\/div><\/div>[vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Context and location&#8221; use_theme_fonts=&#8221;yes&#8221; css=&#8221;%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22font-size%22%3A%221.8rem%22%7D%2C%22laptops%22%3A%7B%22font-size%22%3A%221.8rem%22%7D%2C%22tablets%22%3A%7B%22font-size%22%3A%221.6rem%22%7D%2C%22mobiles%22%3A%7B%22font-size%22%3A%221.6rem%22%7D%7D&#8221;]<div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>The National Centre was created to meet the key goal \u2013 for institutions, for the research sector, for players in the worlds of industry and manufacturing \u2013 of developing technological infrastructure capable of archiving, organising, sharing, processing and analysing big data. High-performance computing, numerical simulations and the development of artificial intelligence and machine learning models are in fact essential tools for the realisation of any innovation strategy in the scientific, social and economics fields. It is also for this reason that the National Centre for Research into HPC, Big Data and Quantum Computing forms part of the research and innovation ecosystem of the Bologna Technopole, which also hosts the Data Centre of the European Weather Centre (ECMWF), the Data Centre of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics and the \u201cLeonardo\u201d supercomputer managed by CINECA.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"w-separator us_custom_e2e8be4e has_text_color size_custom with_line width_default thick_1 style_solid color_border align_center\" style=\"height:1rem\"><div class=\"w-separator-h\"><\/div><\/div>[vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Activities and goals&#8221; use_theme_fonts=&#8221;yes&#8221; css=&#8221;%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22font-size%22%3A%221.8rem%22%7D%2C%22laptops%22%3A%7B%22font-size%22%3A%221.8rem%22%7D%2C%22tablets%22%3A%7B%22font-size%22%3A%221.6rem%22%7D%2C%22mobiles%22%3A%7B%22font-size%22%3A%221.6rem%22%7D%7D&#8221;]<div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>The activities of the National Centre will prioritise innovation in the field of simulation, calculation and high-performance data analysis with two specific focus areas: maintaining and strengthening Italian HPC and big data infrastructure; the development of methods, applications, models, software and tools to integrate the calculation, simulation, collection and analysis of data of interest to the research sector and the manufacturing and social spheres. Promoting and supporting the best interdisciplinary initiatives and expertise, the National Centre is a fundamental institution for the realisation of key projects in the fields of computational and experimental sciences for the climate, the environment, space, the study of matter, medicine, materials, and much more besides.<br \/>\nThe National Centre has adopted a \u201cHub &amp; Spoke\u201d organisational model to carry out its projects: more specifically, the Hub will be responsible for validating and managing the research programmes, whose activities will be planned and carried out by the Spokes and their affiliated bodies. By joining the Foundation\u2019s membership programme, companies and business ventures can access the key networks and expertise to define growth and development strategies based on technology and infrastructure connected with the world of big data, artificial intelligence and Machine Learning, and high-performance computing.<br \/>\nIFAB also creates and manages the <a href=\"https:\/\/osservatorio.supercomputing-icsc.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Observatory on trends and applications of supercomputing<\/a>, a branch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercomputing-icsc.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Research Center in HPC, Big Data, and Quantum Computing<\/a>.
