Italian Quantum Alliance

The Italian Quantum Alliance (AQI) is the national point of reference for quantum science and innovation in Italy. In line with the European Quantum Strategy and the Italian Strategy for Quantum Science and Technologies, AQI aims to build a cohesive national ecosystem, capable of competing internationally and enhancing Italian excellence by bringing academia, science, industry, and policy into a shared vision. Its goal is to ensure that Italy plays a leading role in quantum technologies at global level.
The Alliance operates across all major areas of quantum technologies: computing, simulation, communication, networking, sensing, metrology, and quantum artificial intelligence.

The Alliance’s four main objectives are:

• To promote strategic synergies between research institutes and industry, fostering joint initiatives at local, national, and international level and contributing to the development of advanced quantum infrastructures at national and pan-European level.
• To promote education and skills development through dedicated training and qualification programmes, aligned with the needs of research and the labour market.
• To support technology transfer by strengthening collaboration between research centres and industry and encouraging the creation of start-ups and spin-offs.
• To organise awareness-raising activities aimed at increasing public understanding of quantum technologies, through transparent and evidence-based dialogue.

At operational level, AQI also supports the scientific community by promoting sector-specific events and conferences.

The IFAB Foundation joined AQI as an affiliated member, following approval by the General Assembly on 23 March 2026. Within the Alliance, IFAB brings its expertise in artificial intelligence, big data, and high-performance computing, helping connect academic research, industry, and institutions in the convergence between AI, HPC, and quantum technologies. The Foundation contributes to the Alliance’s strategic dialogue and to stakeholder engagement, supporting the development of the national quantum ecosystem.

Partners include the University of Bologna, the University of Padua, the University of Palermo, the University of Pavia, the University of Trieste, SISSA Trieste, Politecnico di Milano, INFN, INAF, INRIM, CINECA, LENS, the University of Naples Federico II, the University of Insubria, the University of Florence, the University of Bari Aldo Moro, the University of Pisa, the IFAB Foundation, E4 Computer Engineering, IDEARE, and ICSC.
