AI to tackle Climate Change: Romagna Acque’s challenge for IFAB 4 Next Generation Talents participants

Romagna Acque, a member company of the Foundation, has launched an exciting and challenging task for the participants of IFAB 4 Next Generation Talents. As with previous challenges from Illumia, Alstom, and SCS Consulting, this challenge also asks students to test themselves with practical applications of supercomputing technologies. 

The focus of this new challenge is climate change: extreme weather events are becoming an increasingly frequent part of our daily lives. One significant consequence is the growing difficulty in managing water supply systems—making it more crucial than ever to use innovative technologies to develop long-term strategies and solutions. 

In recent years, Artificial Intelligence has become an essential tool in various phases of water production planning, including demand forecasting, resource management, and process optimization. However, many challenges still remain. Specifically, Romagna Acque is asking Next Generation Talents participants to develop an AI system capable of planning the use of raw water supply sources while reducing production and distribution costs. Key variables to consider include availability, weather forecasts, consumption patterns, and hydraulic and infrastructural constraints. 

Challenge Overview 

To meet Romagna Acque’s challenge, students must use Artificial Intelligence to achieve three key objectives:  

  • Greater Efficiency: Optimize the use of water resources, reduce costs, and minimize water losses
  • Greater Sustainability: Preserve water resources and reduce the environmental impact of the integrated water service
  • Greater Resilience: Anticipate and better manage unexpected events
