  2. About IFAB

Promoted by Emilia-Romagna Region, IFAB was born in Bologna, by the end of 2019, in the heart of Italian Data Valley, where it is about to rise a new European research hub: the Big Data Technopole. The Foundation aims to be an independent and influential international point of reference for the scientific and cultural debate on human development, as well as a «bridge» between Technopole’s assets and the business world.

IFAB and the hpc, big data and quantum computing national centre

As founding member of HPC, Big Data and Quantum Computing National Centre, required by PNRR and opening in 2022, IFAB represents the gateway to international sources of knowledge and vertical research skills for private companies, and particularly for SMEs, who want to find new technological paths to boost or create a culture of innovation.

Our challenges

The Foundation’s mission is divided into 3 goals:

  • Reinforcing, enhancing and promoting scientific research and its cross-disciplinary implications, with particular focus on Big Data and Artificial Intelligence.
  • Designing scenarios related to economic and social transformations in connection with the great challenges of our times: climate change, the health crisis, the exploitation of resources, the management of complex urban systems, and the application of conventional and innovative technologies.
  • Dissemination of the role and potential of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in addressing global problems and other issues, with an impact on people’s lives. The goal is to increase the awareness of the importance of these new technologies among the general public, entrepreneurs and politicians.

To pursue these goals, IFAB promotes, manages and carries out cross-disciplinary and applied research, training and dissemination on behalf of the country, contributing to making Bologna and the Emilia-Romagna Region, where it is located, the European Hub of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence for a new inclusive, sustainable, open and human form of development.

QUESTIONS and answers for the country

IFAB offers the country the benefits of its founding members’ assets: the outstanding computing power of the INFN-Cineca-Enea hub; the Data Science and Computer Science expertise of the Big Data Association with local Universities and leading National Research Bodies and Institutes.
This is joined by continuous research, a crucial step for identifying the right questions and building the future, encouraging leading national economic operators to provide useful and functional answers.

IFAB promotes the development of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence technologies and innovative scientific methods which can be used to drive sustainable human development.
