The E3CI Index as a key-tool for the development of “Life ADA (Adaptation in Agriculture)”, a project dedicated to resilience to climate change in the agri-food sector

Climate changes, agriculture reacts“: it is with this claim that the ambitious project “Life ADA (Adaptation in Agricolture)” presents its goals: its aims to address the agri-food companies of the Italian regions to equip them with useful tools to understand the concrete effects of climate change on their activities. To do so, it makes use of the fundamental contribution of E3CI (European Extreme Events Climate Index), the index – made thanks to the contribution of IFAB, Leithà Unipol and CMCC – that studies the impacts of extreme weather events to understand them, measure them and predict their scope.

Designed to increase the resilience of the whole Italian agri-food sector, the project offers companies an innovative digital tool – the ADA Tool web app – that allows to:

  • increase user awareness about climate change issues and impacts on weather scenarios
  • know the dangers to which a farm is exposed in terms of potentially extreme events (wind, drought, hail, late frosts)
  • raise awareness about the damage prevention actions to be taken in the management and programming of farm activities

Thanks to the implementation of the E3CI index, the ADA Tool web app allows players in the agri-food sector to significantly improve their decision-making process on the measures to be taken to address climate risks and avoid productive damage, with a view to productive efficiency in the name of resilience.

The project – currently implemented in an experimental way Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, Tuscany and Lazio involving 6,000 farmers – is coordinated by Unipolsai Assicurazioni S.p.A., financed by the European Union and realized thanks to the contribution of Arpae Emilia-Romagna, CIA – Agricoltori Italiani, CREA-PB, Festambiente (Legambiente), Legacoop Agroalimentare Nord Italia, Leithà Unipol and Regione Emilia-Romagna.
